Can MTHFR mutation cause memory problem?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 29 years old. I have memory problem since I was a boy. I think it may be genetic as my mother also has the same problem. But my mother is not so worse, like me. Three weeks ago, I have started taking ayurveda medicine Mentat for memory my memory issues. All was well for about three weeks. Four days ago, along with Mentat, I have started the tablets of B1, B6, B12, Magnesium and Folic acid. Now, I forget even the common names. For example, I have just forgotten my grandmother's name. My current medications are Euthirox, Mentat, Cebrium, B complex, Magnesium and Folic acid. I read about MTHFR gene. Is it related to my issue?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Day-to-day forgetfulness can be seen in normal individuals too. Distraction due to day-to-day stress, depressed mood, poor nutrition, etc., can lead to memory problems. If you have feelings that your memory is getting worsened, then you should go for mini mental status examination (MMSE). The test can help you find out any cognitive impairment in you. The test is available on the internet too and can be assessed easily. In most cases of memory impairment, the impairment progresses gradually. Sudden memory changes are not seen commonly. Forgetfulness in day-to-day things, recent memory with registration and recall are affected most. Names of family members, universal things are not lost until a very late stage or in severe illness. So, the memory issues you are having are most likely not organic, but are due to distractibility, poor focus and concentration issues. The medicines you are taking are supplement medicines and will help to improve the problem. These are not associated with any adverse effects on health. Just ignore the minor issues and you will see improvement in things. My suggestion is to take only Mentat and avoid other supplements. The symptoms you have mentioned are not classical symptoms of MTHFR gene (Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase). The presentation is different and in my opinion, this is not related to MTHFR mutation. Just remain relaxed and avoid thinking excessively. Try to focus on the things which are important to you.
