What is causing my severe menstrual cramps and back pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have an uncontrollable stomach and back pain when I am on my period. I will not be able to sit for more than half an hour during that period and will be having the same issue on the first two days of menses. I do not want to take medications until it is necessary.

I want to know when years pass by, please tell me,

  1. Will my periods of pain stop or reduce?
  2. Are there any home-based techniques to help with?
  3. My friend suggested using a hot water bag around my stomach and back to help with the pain. Will a hot water bag provide some ease?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The pain during the periods is basically due to dysmenorrhea. Such conditions occur when we eat more spicy foods and stress too much. I suggest you get an ultrasound of your lower abdomen done to rule out any organic pathology, like an ovarian cyst or pelvic inflammation. Otherwise, you should eat more vegetables and fruits.

You can also do Pranayam to destress yourself. Applying a hot water bag over the stomach is also a good option. Otherwise, you can take (consult with a specialist doctor, talk with him or her and take medicine with their consent) tablet Meftal-Spas (Dicyclomine and Mefenamic Acid) whenever you are having severe pain.
