This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 41-year-old married woman with no kids. I last had sex 20 days back and my periods were to start 10 days back, which has not started till now. What should I do?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

You have cramps with missed periods after unprotected sex and are on multiple medications, so it is better to know your pregnancy status correctly. Have serum beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) immediately. If it comes positive, it is better to repeat it after exactly 48 hours to check the progression of beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). It is a normal progressive pregnancy if it shows an increase of more than 60 percent.

If the increase is less than 60 percent, it is an ectopic (outside uterus) pregnancy and needs emergency intervention. If it shows reduction, it means it is a resolving pregnancy. So you need to contact a gynecologist urgently.

If beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) comes negative, it could be due to stress, hormonal imbalance, illness, medications, or hormonal intake.

In case of a negative test, you can have menstrual induction (tablet Primolute N 10 mg twice daily for five days and wait for bleeding for one to two weeks).

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
