Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old and for the last three months, I have had 20-day-long periods, currently, I am on a 21-day-long period and I have noticed that during the day I have a light flow, but as soon as it gets to the night or early hours I begin bleeding heavily and get clots in the the size of my pinky. Any possible suggestions, as to what may have caused this before these cycles I had a normal five to eight-day long period (my clots were slightly large but lower in frequency compared to now).

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern. It is important to see a healthcare provider if you are experiencing prolonged and heavy periods, as it could be a sign of an underlying health issue. Possible causes of heavy periods with clots include hormonal imbalances, polyps or fibroids in the uterus, endometriosis, thyroid disorders, and blood clotting disorders. Your healthcare provider may recommend an ultrasound, blood tests, or other diagnostic tests to determine the cause of your symptoms and develop a treatment plan. It is also important to talk to your healthcare provider about contraception options if you are not currently using any, as certain forms of contraception can help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce heavy bleeding. Since you are losing so much blood, I advise you to, see a gynecologist and try home remedies to counter anemia

1. Ginger: Ginger helps to reduce menstrual cramps and can also help to regulate blood flow. Drinking ginger tea or adding fresh ginger to your food can help alleviate heavy periods.

2. Cinnamon: Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to reduce heavy bleeding. You can add cinnamon to your food or drink cinnamon tea.

3. Turmeric: Turmeric is another spice that can help reduce menstrual cramps and heavy bleeding. You can take turmeric supplements or add it to your food.

4. Aloe Vera: Aloe vera can help to reduce heavy bleeding and cramping. You can drink aloe vera juice or apply aloe vera gel to your abdomen.

5. Iron-rich foods: Heavy periods can lead to anemia due to excessive blood loss. Eating iron-rich foods like spinach, lentils, red meat, and liver can help increase your iron levels.

6. Vitamins and supplements: Taking supplements like vitamin C and vitamin K can help to reduce heavy periods and prevent excessive blood loss.

7. Yoga and exercise: Practicing yoga and exercises like pelvic floor exercises can help to reduce menstrual pain and regulate blood flow.

8. Essential oils: Essential oils like lavender, clary sage, and peppermint can help to ease menstrual pain and reduce heavy bleeding. You can add these oils to your bathwater or use them in a diffuser.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
