What causes irregular periods despite a negative hCG test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my last period one month before, and I had unprotected sex five days after my period and took the pill the next day. I had bleeding on the 20 th day of my period. Yet I am experiencing irregular periods. I took pregnancy and beta hcg tests, but both came negative. I am worried about why I am not getting my regular period.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Since you have the pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex, the chances of getting pregnant are rare. The pill has a lot of side effects, such as irregular periods, spotting, delayed periods, etc., since you get some withdrawal bleeding on the 20 th, which can be why the periods are delayed.

If you miss your period, wait for a week and repeat the urine or blood test. The pill also has a lower rate of failure sometimes. Beta hCG was very accurate. If that is negative, you cannot be pregnant.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Yes, the beta hCG came out negative. I am just concerned about missing my periods, as I do not want my cycle to get disrupted.

Kindly help.

Answered by Dr. Usha Mohan

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

That is the side effect of the pill, and nothing can be done. The irregularity may continue until you get normal period.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
