How can I treat my mesothelioma at age 65?

Hello doctor,

I am 65 and was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma limited to one lung. Doctors said it is a serious cancer but also mentioned that the extent and spread matter a lot. I worked in construction many years ago and was exposed to dust and insulation, so maybe that explains it now.

I am trying to understand the outlook honestly, without sugarcoating.

  1. Can I survive mesothelioma in one lung at age 65?

  2. Does being confined to one side really improve survival chances?

  3. Are surgery and chemo meant to control the disease or only relieve symptoms?

I want realistic expectations so I can plan my life and family decisions properly.

Mesothelioma is indeed a serious cancer, and it is commonly linked to past asbestos exposure, which can happen in construction or insulation work. One important thing about this disease is that it often appears many years after the exposure, so it is quite possible that the work you did in the past contributed to it now.

If the disease is truly confined to one side of the chest and has not spread elsewhere, that generally gives doctors more treatment options and usually a better outlook compared to a widely spread disease.

In selected patients, surgery along with chemotherapy (a drug treatment that uses powerful chemicals to kill fast-growing cells) may be considered to control the disease and prolong survival. So in that situation, treatment is not only for symptom relief but also aimed at slowing the cancer as much as possible.

At the same time, it is important to be realistic. Mesothelioma can behave aggressively, and even when it appears limited on scans, very small microscopic disease may still be present. Because of this, most treatments focus on controlling the cancer and maintaining quality of life rather than guaranteeing a cure.

Your treating team will decide about surgery mainly based on the exact stage of the disease, lymph node involvement, and your overall health and lung function. When surgery is feasible, it is usually done with the intention of better disease control rather than purely for symptom relief.
