How to treat metastatic breast cancer that has spread to the jaws?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have metastatic breast cancer that has spread to the bone. I feel pain in my lower jaw, and my teeth feel sensitive and loose; if I do not want to undergo chemotherapy or surgery, what is the best alternative to help me manage my symptoms? I am not looking for a cure but a way to manage symptoms, maintain my dental and oral health and minimize cancer spread. Kindly advice.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Regarding your disease, metastatic breast cancer, are you taking any medicines for metastatic cancer? (Zoledronic acid, Denosumab, etc.) for your bone? If yes, your oncologist should hold these medications and refer you to a dental and maxillofacial surgeon for assessment to rule out any serious side effects of these drugs because these drugs can sometimes cause some serious problems to the jaw (osteonecrosis of the jaw). Of course, till that time, you must maintain good oral hygiene, and you can take painkillers prescribed by your oncologist.
