Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I would like to know if it is safe to take berberine supplements along with my Metoprolol and Sertraline.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Based on your medications, combining berberine (benzylisoquinoline alkaloid) with Metoprolol and Sertraline presents moderate risks and should only be done under a doctor’s supervision.
Berberine can lower blood pressure. Taking it along with Metoprolol (a beta-blocker) may cause your blood pressure or heart rate to drop too much, leading to dizziness or fainting.
Also, your liver uses specific enzymes to process these medications. Berberine may slow down this process, which can increase the levels of Metoprolol (metabolized by CYP2D6) and Sertraline (metabolized by CYP3A4) in your blood and raise the risk of side effects.
There is limited data regarding its interaction with Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine) and Diclofenac (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), but adding any supplement can increase treatment complexity. Your doctor should be aware of all medications you are taking. So do not take it on your own; it can be risky.
Therefore, berberine may interfere with how your body processes your prescribed medicines. Please consult your doctor before starting it. They can review your doses and monitor you for low blood pressure or increased side effects.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
