Can a disrupted sleep schedule increase migraine frequency?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 33-year-old woman with a long history of migraines. Recently, I changed jobs, and my sleep schedule has become chaotic. Some nights I sleep five hours, while other nights I get nine hours, and my weekend sleep is completely different again. Since this change, my migraines seem to be much more frequent.
Before changing jobs, I averaged about three migraine days per month, but now it feels closer to eight or nine days. I am trying to determine if my sleep patterns are the main culprit or if something else might be going on.
Please guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concerns.
I am sorry to hear that you are going through this, especially while adjusting to a new job and a changing routine. Sleep disruption is a well-known trigger for migraines, and the patterns you have described, irregular sleep hours, varying sleep durations, and different weekend schedules, could definitely contribute to an increase in the frequency of your migraines.
Many people with migraines find that both insufficient sleep and excessive sleep can trigger attacks. Additionally, sudden changes in your sleep schedule can be just as important as the total number of hours you sleep.
Other factors related to starting a new job, such as increased stress, changes in meal patterns, hydration levels, caffeine intake, screen time, and physical activity, can also play a role in migraine frequency. Given the timing of your worsening migraines, sleep disturbances appear to be a significant possibility.
To better understand any connections, consider keeping a migraine diary. This diary could include details about your headaches, along with your sleep patterns, stress levels, diet, and any other potential triggers you notice.
I hope you find this information helpful.
Thank you.
