What causes migraines to worsen, and how can I manage them?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was diagnosed with migraines when I was about 15 years old. They come and go and usually last for three to four days. I have been getting them more frequently lately, and I would honestly rate my pain as a 10.

Last night, I went to sleep with a severe migraine and had run out of Excedrin. Usually, when I go to sleep with a migraine, it is still there by morning, or it is gone. Last night was different, and nothing like that has ever happened to me. I need answers.

My migraine woke me out of my sleep and also woke up my boyfriend. I was tossing and turning and yelling out in pain, holding my head, and in absolute tears. What could be the cause of my migraines, or why could my migraines be getting worse?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Migraine pains, if not treated by proper medication, then they become severe. Migraine treatment - If it is moderate migraine, then you can try these:

  1. Aspirin.
  2. Ibuprofen every six to eight hours.
  3. Naproxen initial 500 mg then 250 mg every six hours.
  4. Ketoprofen 50 mg every six to eight hours.

One of these can be tried and should be available over the counter. If one of these is not effective, then there is also medication specific for migraines, like Sumatriptan, Zolmitriptan, Eletriptan, and Naratriptan.

Follow the below-mentioned steps to prevent:

  1. You must sleep well, at least for six to eight hours a day.
  2. Eat regularly, and avoid skipping meals.
  3. Drink plenty of water.

Every individual has headache-triggering factors like hypoglycemia, hunger, strong lights, loud music, smell, etc. In your case, the triggering factor is strong light and loud noise, and you should avoid it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks.
