Does anxiety affect the heart and cause MVP with mild MR?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have done my ECG (echocardiography), echo, TMT (treadmill test), and all blood tests. All the reports are normal. The echo showed MVP (mitral valve prolapse) with mild MR (mitral regurgitation). I feel anxious and stressed. I also have tiredness and atypical chest pain. I have lost five kilograms weight, and now I weigh 105 pounds. Will anxiety cause weight loss or MVP? I am taking tablets Sertraline - 50 mg and Etizolam 0.25 mg for anxiety. Are these tablets fine for anxiety? Please check my reports and give your opinion.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and saw your reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). I understand the anxiety you are having. All reports, including echo and ECG (echocardiography), are normal. You do not have anything to worry about. Gradually stop all anti-anxiety drugs, and I suggest the following. Relax completely.

I suggest you take a tablet of Propranolol once daily at night after food for ten days, aCapsule containing coenzymes once daily for ten days after breakfast, atablet containing Ibuprofen once daily for five days after breakfast, atablet of Pantoprazole - daily for ten days before breakfast. Do follow-up after ten days.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

What about MVP with mild MR. Is this a problem related to the heart? But my TMT reports are normal.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back toicliniq.com.

There is no problem with mild MR. About 40 % of the general population have mild MR (mitral regurgitation). ECG (electrocardiogram) and Echo are normal. If it gets worse, respiration becomes difficult, and the blood starts coming in a cough. If that does not happen, do not worry. The blood pressure also tells whether the MR is progressing. If it occurs, the doctor will repeat the Echo after one year. I have studied your case in detail. Do not worry. I suggest starting my treatment, and you will feel the improvement. Get back to me if you have any other doubt.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

As informed, I took Sertraline 50 mg, Clonazepam 0.25 mg, and Etizolam 0.25 mg for the past five days. Since yesterday I have been taking Sertraline 25 mg. After taking these tablets, I feel sleepy, dizzy, and have other side effects. Please tell me, can I take or stop these tablets? For two days, I feel nausea and digestive issues. I am not able to eat food normally and spit mucus. Are these the side effects of taking Sertraline and Etizolam tablets? Will these tablets affect the heart?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you start the treatment advised earlier.

Thank you.
