Can Ocrelizumab help improve symptoms in MS patients?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

One of my colleague’s daughters has been diagnosed with MS, and she is progressively getting weaker. We have been researching online, and found information about a treatment called Ocrelizumab, which is used for primary progressive multiple sclerosis. It is administered by injection and mentioned by the National Health Service. We are wondering if this treatment could help her. Is it known to be effective in slowing down the progression of the disease or improving symptoms? We are hoping to find something that can make a positive difference in her condition. Any advice or insights you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am so sorry to hear about your colleague's daughter. You did not mention what type of multiple sclerosis (chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, leading to varying degrees of neurological impairment) she has been diagnosed with (relapsing-remitting, secondary progressive, or primary progressive) or what kind of disease-modifying medication she is currently taking.

However, generally speaking, Ocrelizumab is one of the most effective treatments available for MS and can even slow down the progressive form of the disease. While it cannot cure MS, it can significantly reduce disease activity and, therefore, decrease disability.

If her disease course seems to be progressive, the best course of action is to inform her neurologist. In such cases, the standard approach may include switching the treatment to Ocrelizumab.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
