How to cope with multiple sclerosis at 24 years?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 24-year-old married woman recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). I experienced tingling and numbness in my legs and difficulty lifting my leg. After an MRI and spinal lab tests, MS was confirmed. The diagnosis has been overwhelming, and I’m feeling anxious and struggling with my mental health. My husband suggested I see a psychiatrist because of the stress.

I have several questions I hope you can help with:

  1. Is MS a lifelong condition?

  2. Can I expect to live a normal life again?

  3. How can I cope mentally and emotionally with this diagnosis?

  4. Is it safe for me to get pregnant and have children?

  5. Will MS affect my baby or their health?

  6. Are there any dietary changes I should consider to manage MS better?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I understand your concerns regarding your recent MS diagnosis. The course of multiple sclerosis can vary widely; some people experience relapses followed by periods of remission, while others may have a more progressive form. Treatments are available to help speed recovery during flare-ups and to modify the disease course.

Regarding pregnancy, it is generally possible to conceive and have a healthy baby, but it’s important to consult with your obstetrician, especially if you are taking medications for MS.

While MS is often considered a lifelong condition, many individuals experience long periods of remission or symptom-free intervals.

Please feel free to reach out with any further questions.

Thank you.
