Is the metallic taste in the mouth related to MS symptoms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mom is 52 years old, and her MS symptoms have taken a strange turn. She has started experiencing these episodes where she tastes metal in her mouth, followed by a complete loss of taste. These episodes last for hours and seem to get triggered by certain foods. Her neurologist has not seen this before. Could this be related to her MS progression?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

There are quite a number of things that can cause a metallic taste in the mouth. The probable causes are:

  1. Acid reflux from the stomach.
  2. Medications.
  3. Teeth and gum issues.

These are the issues that are the most likely cause of the metallic taste and not necessarily MS symptoms.

The probable diagnosis is acid reflux from the stomach.

I have a few questions to ask:

  1. Does she have any other symptoms other than the metallic taste or loss of taste?
  2. Did she recently start any medication?
  3. Can she examine her teeth and gums to check for any abnormalities?
  4. Did she recently introduce any new food to her meal?

Do let me know the answers to the above questions, as this might help in determining the cause.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach me again.

Thank you.
