Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a doctor by profession and I am in my early thirties. I have amblyopia in my right eye and my left eye is -4D. I am worried about my single best eye. How to protect it and not let its eyesight decrease? What options are available for treatment to increase eye-sight in the functional eye?

Answered by Dr. Hussein Ayoub

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Well, I have reviewed your attached reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).Yes, you have amblyopia in the right eye due to compound myopic astigmatism. There is not a definite way to protect the other eye. We would just advise regular checkups every couple of years, wearing the glasses, avoiding trauma, etc. but there is nothing to treat or do any prophylactic measures against, so that is my advice. If you would like to treat myopia in this eye with refractive surgery, you can do it but I am generally guarded towards that approach because every procedure has risks and in your case, you cannot afford to take such a risk in your only functioning eye.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

If the power in my left eye (functional) increases then what are the treatment options available? Are there any advancements in the treatment of amblyopia?

Answered by Dr. Hussein Ayoub

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Well, normally it will not increase. Myopia only increases until the age of 21, normally. If it increases after that, I would recommend you do a pentacam test. It is an investigation to exclude keratoconus. Unfortunately, amblyopia cannot be treated after the age of 16.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
