At 29, how can I manage my constant allergy?
Patient's Query
Hello, Doctor,
I am a 29-year-old man who has been dealing with constant sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and a runny nose for several years. My symptoms are usually worse in the morning and whenever I clean the house or spend time in my bedroom. I recently had allergy testing, which showed sensitivity to dust mites and pollen.
Despite using prescribed medications, I still wake up feeling stuffed up and tired. While researching ways to improve my symptoms, I found discussions asking what household changes made the biggest difference for your rhinitis at 29, and it made me wonder whether my home environment is contributing more than I realize. I have carpets, heavy curtains, and a pet dog that often sleeps in my room. I am trying to decide which changes would be worth making.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Based on your history, I do think your home environment is likely contributing to your symptoms
Since you are allergic to dust mites and your symptoms are worse in the morning and in the bedroom, that is where I should focus first.
The changes that tend to help most are using dust mite covers on your mattress and pillows, washing bedding weekly in hot water, reducing carpets and heavy curtains if possible, and keeping the bedroom as dust-free as you can. A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) air purifier may also be beneficial
I would also consider keeping your dog out of the bedroom for a few weeks to see if your symptoms improve. Even if a pet allergy was not identified on testing, pet dander can sometimes worsen nasal symptoms
Continue your prescribed medications, but environmental control is often just as important
If you are still having significant symptoms despite these measures, follow up with your allergist to discuss whether additional treatment options may be appropriate
I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
