Is nasal congestion related to COVID-19?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had COVID-19 three weeks ago. My nasal passages look wider. I feel like I am taking in too much air at night, which is uncomfortable and scary. There is little to no pressure when I sneeze from my right nose. I feel cold air at the back of my throat when I breathe. I randomly experience a funny smell coming from my nose. I have no issues with my smell or taste. However, I did lose my smell for two days due to COVID-19. I have been concerned for a week. I still have some congestion. I will meet an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon the next week, but I desperately want answers regarding my problems.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have post-COVID-19 symptoms that differ from one patient to another. These symptoms can persist from weeks to months and sometimes for years. I suggest you use an antihistamine daily for the cold air sensation in your throat.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

I was reading about empty nose syndrome. Should I worry about that because my nose is so dry and wide?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is common after excessive surgical turbinectomy and in some cases of atrophic rhinitis. It is characterized by nasal congestion and a complete loss of smell sensation.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

I am happy with your diagnosis. Will antihistamine tablets make things normal?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please do not worry as you will get better with time.
