How to relieve nasal congestion and cold in a 2-month-old baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 2-month-old son has a cold.

What can I give him for the cold, and what dosage is safe?

My husband, myself, and my daughter have had a virus since last week. We took the baby to the pediatrician yesterday, and he was fine but received two vaccines. He showed signs of a stuffy nose during his night sleep, and I sucked his nose free of mucus using the nasal aspirator. He is still congested.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concerns.

As per the limited information provided, your baby is in contact with other family members having a viral illness, and probably he also got it. If he is active, feeding well, has no difficulty breathing, and sleeps well, then simply, use normal saline nasal drops. Use two drops in each nostril every four hours for three days (keep the head end of the baby slightly low down while instilling the drops). Gentle sucking of nostrils with a bulb is acceptable.

No other medicine is required. As he received the vaccine also, he may get a fever, and your doctor must have prescribed you Paracetamol drops. So, you can use them if needed. If he develops any difficulty in breathing, then that is the time to take him to a pediatrician or hospital.

I would be happy to help you.

Revert in case of queries.

Take care.
