Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 30 years old and recently consulted an ENT specialist because of nasal blockage and breathing difficulty. Surgery was suggested almost immediately during the consultation.
This made me wonder whether it is reasonable to question or delay surgery at this stage, because I expected more discussion about medications or other treatments first.
Are there situations in which surgery is clearly the best option for nasal polyps, or is it appropriate to consider alternatives before proceeding? I feel nervous about rushing into surgery.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I have read your query and understand your concern.
It is completely reasonable to ask questions and discuss alternative treatment options before deciding on surgery for nasal polyps. In many cases, medical treatment is considered first, especially when the polyps are smaller or the symptoms are less severe.
Initial management often includes intranasal corticosteroid sprays, to reduce inflammation and polyp size. A medical trial for several weeks is commonly recommended before surgery is considered.
However, there are situations where surgery may be the most appropriate option These include severe nasal obstruction, large polyps causing near-complete blockage, chronic sinus infections, poor response to medications, loss of smell, or imaging findings showing significant sinus disease or structural obstruction.
In such cases, medications alone may not provide adequate relief because the polyps physically block airflow and prevent topical treatments from reaching deeper sinus areas.
Surgery, usually functional endoscopic sinus surgery, helps remove obstructive tissue and improve sinus drainage, but ongoing medical therapy is still important afterward to reduce the risk of recurrence.
If you feel the discussion was too brief or you are uncertain about proceeding, seeking a second opinion from another ENT specialist is entirely appropriate.
Understanding the severity of your condition, imaging results, and all available options can help you make a more comfortable and informed decision.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
