Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 36 years old and have suffered from excessive mucus in my throat and nose since childhood. I take steam inhalation and perform nasal washing every day. Still, the problem persists. Because of this post-nasal drip, my sense of taste has suffered; my mouth is always salty. Because of the white coating on my tongue, I always have bad breath. The problem seems to elevate despite taking every possible remedy. I also tried nasal spray for 60 days and took a CT scan. I have polyps and a little deviated septum. Why is my body producing so much mucus that, despite clearing it every 20 minutes, it still keeps flowing in my throat and nose? It is super thick and sticky. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. Sinonasal polyposis could cause chronic post-nasal drip and associated symptoms like bad breath. Therefore, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis should be considered in your case. The treatment starts with medical management using antibiotics, nasal sprays, steroids, and antihistamines. A CT (computed tomography) scan after appropriate medical treatment gives an idea of the extent of the disease and plans surgery if required. Failure to respond to medical treatment calls for surgical removal of polyps and sending the tissue for histopathological examination to confirm the diagnosis. Kindly revert for more queries. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply, doctor.

So do you mean that excessive mucus formation is due to allergy and it is coming in the throat due to polyps and septum issues? I had undergone treatment, as you mentioned earlier. I consulted an ENT specialist who, after looking at the CT report, said that surgery is not required. What could be the reason for so much mucus production? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Post-nasal drip is one of the major criteria for the diagnosis of rhinosinusitis. Please send your scan report. Kindly revert for more queries. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The CT scan report does not show any significant polyposis. Do you have heartburn and regurgitation symptoms too often? I would suggest the following: 1. Tablet Pan D (Domperidone and Pantoprazole) once a day for 15 days. 2. Apply Furamist (Fluticasone furoate) nasal spray 2 puffs twice a day. Kindly revert for more queries. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply, doctor.

I do not have any heartburn symptoms. Can this be due to an allergy? Can the smell from my mouth due to the white coating on my tongue be a fungal infection?

Answered by Dr. Manu Wilfred

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

A bad-smelling tongue with a white coating could be fungal. I would suggest you take the following: 1. Condys gargles (KMnO4) twice a day along with treatment with other medications. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
