What to do after poking with contaminated tattoo needle?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I poked myself with a dirty needle and dirty tattoo ink. Both were cross-contaminated with raw pigskin. Do I need medical attention?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You need not worry but do not neglect at the same time. I would suggest having a TT (tetanus toxoid) injection as vaccination prophylaxis. Check for any swelling or rash and secondary bacterial infections. Start antibiotics if there is any local swelling and pus formation. Finally, consult with your physician in case of any emergency.

Take care.
