Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 32 years old, and ever since we ate at a beachside restaurant two days ago, everyone in my family has been violently sick. I have vomited twelve times, cannot keep water down, and my stomach feels as if someone is twisting it. My 65-year-old father appears to be severely dehydrated, and my sister fainted while trying to reach the bathroom. We all share a single bathroom, and the situation is chaotic. The hotel staff mentioned something about Norovirus. How long does this typically last, and how dangerous is it for older adults? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Symptoms such as vomiting, multiple episodes of loose stools, and abdominal pain could be indicative of a bacterial or viral gastrointestinal infection.
Some complications associated with gastrointestinal infections include dehydration, lethargy, and more.
Dehydration can be serious if adequate water intake is not maintained. The signs of severe dehydration include:
Lethargy or decreased activity levels.
Pale and sunken eyes.
Cold hands or feet.
Faster breathing and heart rate.
Irritability, drowsiness, or confusion.
Dark yellow urine or less frequent urination.
Reduced skin elasticity.
If any of these signs are present, it is important to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Regarding Norovirus, a stool examination can help confirm the presence of this virus.
Investigations to be performed:
Complete blood count.
Stool examination (if symptoms persist).
Treatment plan:
Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) to prevent dehydration.
Antibiotics or antivirals (after confirmation of the bacterial or viral origin of the gastrointestinal infection).
Preventive measures:
Maintaining proper hygiene, including frequent handwashing.
Ensuring that meat and vegetables are properly cooked.
Cleaning food thoroughly before cooking.
Disinfecting areas contaminated with norovirus: Due to the highly contagious nature of Norovirus, disinfecting contaminated areas is crucial. Follow these steps:
Clean the surface first:
Wear gloves: Always use disposable gloves to protect yourself from exposure.
Clean the area: Clean the surface with soap and water to remove any visible dirt and debris before disinfecting.
Use a suitable disinfectant:
Check disinfectant products labeled as effective against Norovirus or other similar viruses, such as Clostridium difficile or rotavirus.
Bleach solution: A diluted bleach solution (1/3 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water) can be used. Ensure the solution is fresh and that the area is well-ventilated when applying.
Apply the disinfectant:
Follow product instructions: Apply the disinfectant generously to the contaminated surface.
Allow contact time: Ensure the disinfectant remains on the surface for the required time (usually five to ten minutes) to effectively kill the virus.
Wipe down surfaces: After the disinfectant has sat for the recommended time, wipe down the surface with clean paper towels or disposable cloths.
Launder-contaminated fabrics: Wash any contaminated fabrics, such as clothing, bedding, or towels, in hot water (at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit or 60 degrees Celsius) with a good detergent. If safe for the fabric, add bleach.
Dispose of gloves and materials Properly: After cleaning, dispose of all disposable materials in a sealed trash bag to prevent further contamination.
Wash your hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after cleaning.
Ensure that cleaning and disinfecting procedures are thorough and repeated as necessary, especially in high-traffic or frequently touched areas.
Your family’s symptoms may be due to a Norovirus infection or possibly a seafood allergy or infection. For Norovirus infection, only symptomatic treatment is necessary, such as using Cyclopam for abdominal pain and ORS for dehydration. Most cases resolve within five to seven days. However, if there is an electrolyte imbalance or severe dehydration, please consult a physician promptly.
Please let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
