Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My wife has been feeling awful for the past couple of days. She is 36 years old and otherwise healthy but cannot even keep water down now. She started vomiting two nights ago and also has non-stop diarrhea. We are trying ORS and brooth, but she says her stomach still hurts so bad. She’s gone to the bathroom at least 10 times since morning and now looks pale and weak. I am worried she is getting dehydrated, but she refuses to go to the ER. Could this be norovirus which is common these days? How long should we wait before panicking? Also, is there anything we can do at home besides what we are already trying? I am scared this might get serious fast.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Yes, most likely, these are the symptoms of norovirus gastroenteritis that manifest as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe abdominal or stomach pain. Norovirus is highly contagious. Most people get better within 1 to 3 days. There is no specific antiviral therapy.
It is advised to stay at home and replace the fluid loss with an oral rehydration solution. Drinks with a high sugar content, such as juice or soft drinks, are not recommended because they could worsen diarrhea.
Avoid dehydration symptoms such as headache, delirium, dizziness, or confusion. Severely dehydrated adults should be treated by emergency personnel arriving in an ambulance or a hospital emergency room. Isotonic saline, salts, and fluids delivered through a vein are absorbed quickly. I wish her a speedy recovery.
The Probable causes:Norovirus gastroenteritis
Treatment plan:Emergency room to avoid dehydration and to fasten recovery
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
