How to manage norovirus infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

I started experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea two days ago, and I assumed it was norovirus. However, I now have a fever of 102°F, chills, and muscle aches. I thought norovirus usually resolves in 48 hours, but I am feeling worse instead of better.

Could this be a secondary bacterial infection, or does norovirus sometimes last longer?

When should I go to the hospital?

I have been drinking fluids, but I still feel lightheaded and weak. Also, how long should I wait before returning to work to ensure I do not spread it to others? I work in food service, so I want to be extra cautious.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Yes, norovirus infection cases usually recover within a period of two to three days. However, infections such as Vibrio cholerae, bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery, or food poisoning may take longer to resolve.

I suggest undergoing the following medical investigations:

Stool routine test.

Stool culture.

Stool PCR for pathogens.

Drink plenty of fluids, take probiotic supplements, and get adequate rest. It is better to isolate yourself. In the case of a norovirus infection, you may carry the virus for several weeks. Please review your reports or consult your physician, who will examine and treat you accordingly.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
