How to manage norovirus infection during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 34 weeks pregnant and recently caught norovirus. I am throwing up every 15 minutes and experiencing unusual cramps-could this be labor starting? How long can my baby tolerate me not keeping food down? My urine shows high ketones, and my blood pressure is low (88/52) millimeters of mercury(mmHg). Do I need to go to the hospital? Should I pause my prenatal vitamins until this settles? How can I prevent dehydration from affecting my baby?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Norovirus itself does not directly affect your baby, but the dehydration it causes can lead to abdominal cramps, which, if severe, may trigger preterm labor. To prevent complications, it is crucial to stay hydrated by increasing fluid intake. This will help reduce cramps and lower the risk of preterm labor. Adequate rest and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can also aid recovery. If your cramps worsen despite these measures, you should visit the emergency room for Intravenous means (IV) fluids and medications to prevent preterm labor.

Probable Cause:

Dehydration due to norovirus infection.

Treatment Plan:

  1. Increase fluid intake to stay hydrated.

  2. Get adequate rest.

  3. Take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) 500 milligrams (mg), two tablets every eight hours for three days.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

    Thank you.
