Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have noticed that whenever I sleep with my hands under my body, I wake up with them feeling numb and lifeless, as if the blood flow has been cut off. It usually takes one or two minutes of moving or exercising my hands before they return to normal. This has been happening for over a year now.
What should I do?
Please advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns.
What you are describing sounds like temporary numbness or tingling in your hands caused by pressure on the nerves or blood vessels while you sleep. When you lie on your hands or arms for a prolonged period, the pressure can temporarily restrict blood flow or compress the nerves, leading to that “lifeless” or “pins and needles” feeling upon waking. Once you move or shake your hands, circulation and nerve signals quickly return to normal, which is why the sensation resolves within a few minutes.
This is usually not dangerous if it only occurs when pressure is applied and goes away shortly after waking. However, since you mentioned it has been happening for over a year, it may be helpful to check whether your sleeping position is causing repeated nerve compression, particularly of the ulnar nerve (at the elbow) or the median nerve (at the wrist).
Using a softer pillow, adjusting your sleeping posture, and avoiding sleeping with your arms bent tightly under your body may help. If you ever experience persistent numbness, weakness, or pain that continues even when you are awake and moving normally, it would be wise to consult a doctor or neurologist to rule out conditions such as nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome, or peripheral neuropathy.
For now, it appears to be a positional issue that can often be improved with better sleep posture and body awareness.
Take care, and I hope this was useful.
Thank you.
