Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took an emergency contraceptive pill during my conceiving days. I took it before and after intercourse. I am worried since I took these pills for the first time. Do I need to worry about it?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Contraceptive pills usually contain two hormones. The emergency contraceptive pill helps to prevent conception. However, all hormonal contraceptive pills have some side effects, such as irregular bleeding, spotting or periods, mood variations, and breast tenderness, but all these side effects are temporary. The long-term use of oral contraceptive pills increases the chances of stroke, hypertension, migraine, clot formation, etc. These oral contraceptive pills are contraindicated for a few conditions, like systemic lupus erythematosus, venous thromboembolism, etc. Therefore, I suggest you try Progesterone pills for contraception, a Medroxyprogesterone (progestin) injection for three months, or an intrauterine device, but these all have minor side effects. It also depends on how your body responds to these methods.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them, and take medicines with their consent.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
