Is flossing necessary to maintain good oral hygiene?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old female. I have been diligent about brushing and flossing my teeth regularly.

1. What are the key components of an effective daily oral hygiene routine, and in what order should they be performed, like brushing, flossing, and mouthwash?

2. Are there any particular toothbrushes, toothpaste, or flossing products that you recommend for maintaining good oral health?

3. How often should I replace my toothbrush or toothbrush head, and what signs should I look for to indicate that it is time for a replacement?

4. Can you guide me on proper brushing and flossing techniques to ensure that I am doing them correctly and effectively?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

It is always better to brush twice daily after meals in an up-down or circular motion.

1. Flossing is needed only at night before sleep to remove any food debris that may be stuck between teeth.

2. Brush can be replaced for around four to six months at least; look for bent bristles to replace it.

3. Take care to brush every surface of all teeth at least once and use any toothpaste, but use enamel repair toothpaste available to help prevent sensitive teeth.

4. Floss should not be pushed between teeth but should be used where it easily goes in.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
