How to take care of oral health?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23 year old female. Could you provide a detailed overview of an effective daily oral care routine? I am interested in understanding the proper sequence of brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. What are the recommended toothbrushing techniques for ensuring thorough cleaning while avoiding damage to teeth and gums? Are electric toothbrushes more effective than manual ones? How does flossing contribute to oral health, and are there specific techniques for effective interdental cleaning? How often should I schedule dental check-ups and cleanings? How does diet impact oral health? Are there certain foods or habits that can contribute to dental problems or support healthy teeth and gums?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I advise you to do the following things:

  1. Brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush with a ribbon of fluoride toothpaste.

  2. Gargle your mouth every time after having food, drinking something, etc.

  3. A manual toothbrush is sufficient. Powered toothbrushes are recommended for the elderly, kids, and handicapped people.

  4. Replace your toothbrush every three months.

  5. Limit sugar four times a day.

  6. Avoid citrus fruits to an extent, because they may damage enamel. You can take bananas, watermelons, and muskmelons safely.

  7. Limit snacks.

  8. Visit a dentist every even months.

  9. Interdental brushes and flosses are prescribed by the dentist only when the contact between two teeth is wider. Otherwise, the use of floss will cause gingival damage. Use floss only when your dentist recommends it.

  10. Mouthwashes are meant to be prescribed by the dentist. The use of mouthwashes for more than a week will cause staining of teeth. So it is not for routine use.

I hope that you got your answer.

Please let me know if you need help.

Thank you.
