Can HIV be transmitted through protected oral sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a question about HIV exposure that has been bothering me for the last week. I have had covered oral sex (with a condom on). In addition to that, I was grinding naked on his penis with my bottom. I just got waxing done in my pubic and anal regions. I am worried that his penis might have touched my anus briefly (there was no penetration). Could I have HIV? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to the icliniq.com

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.

Anal grinding is usually considered an activity that has a low risk for HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) transmission. If there are fresh cuts or wounds and if there is active bleeding from those cuts, there is a risk for transmission. However, this is not an effective means of HIV transmission. For transmission to take place, there needs to be an exchange of body fluids.

There might be a small risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can be transmitted through skin contact, especially if the other person is symptomatic for any of these infections.

Getting tested for HIV and other STIs, which include syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, and chlamydia, will help relieve your stress and also help to know your baseline status.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you have further queries.

Thank you.
