What are the treatment options for oral ulcers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I just recently noticed a small pimple inside my mouth. It is located on the inner cheek near the opening of my mouth. It feels a bit tender when I rub my tongue against it. I am kind of nervous thinking it might be the start of something malignant. It appears to be white with red around it.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern regarding your mouth ulcer.

I have reviewed the images (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity) you provided, and the ulcer has well-defined margins. Please answer a few questions:

  1. Do you smoke?
  2. Do you chew tobacco?
  3. Is there any family history of oral lesions or cancer?
  4. Have you recently consumed any hot food items?

Kindly revert with your answers.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you for the reply, doctor.

No, I do not smoke and have no history of lesions. Periodically, I get mouth ulcers, but that is about it. I eat hot sauce, though I do not remember if I ate anything spicy recently. What do you mean by "well-defined margins?"

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

By "well-defined margins," I meant it does not seem to be malignant. You should increase your water intake to at least 83.54 fluid ounces per day and keep your gut clean. You can take vitamin B12 supplements. If it does not heal within a week, it is better to consult a dermatologist.

Thank you for using icliniq, and have a nice day.
