Why is there a hole connecting tooth socket to nasal cavity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a molar removed two years ago in the upper right area. Since then the hole has never healed. It goes right up into the nasal cavity. Air passes right through my mouth into the nose. Several sinus infections are there.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I got your chief complaint and I have arrived at a conclusion that it is a case of oro-antral fistula which had been caused by traumatic extraction of molar tooth particularly upper molars. Due to either over instrumentation by a dentist. The symptoms of this problem are difficulty in eating food and air passing through the nose. This condition leads to sinusitis which frequently gets infected.

The treatment strategy includes askingyour nearby oral and maxillofacial surgeon to close the defect. It can need a minor surgical procedure. The dentist should have noticed this early and corrected but it seems an error on his part. Though I diagnosed your problem with your history, it would be better if you can tell me precisely which tooth is this or you can send an attachment photograph of the area. Moreover, if you have any radiograph do send me.
