Why is my face becoming flatter after braces?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have started my braces treatment and had four teeth extractions because of overcrowding. Now it has been six months of braces, and I am not at all liking my facial profile; it is becoming flatter.

I lost my cheeks and fullness of face; more than biting my face is my utmost concern. When I addressed it to my orthodontist about lip flattening and face flattening, he just said it is because of age and diet.

He was like, "I did not start retraction and will start pulling my front teeth back in the next appointment, which will significantly change my face." Is there any way to regain the earlier face?

Please guide.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Identifying the reason for your concern can be tough, especially if there are no before-and-after photos or X-ray pictures available for reference. Normally, the primary reason for space is the extraction of teeth that occurs when one has oversized teeth in comparison to his or her jaws, or if he or she has teeth of normal size but has a smaller jaw.

You did not talk about whether you are losing weight or on a strict diet plan. Losing a lot of weight at once can result in a huge amount of fat loss, even facial fat.

I strongly advise you to consult with your orthodontist and clarify your questions. If you do not like the orthodontist's advice, then you should get a consultation with another orthodontist, since it will prevent your teeth from being fixed in a certain place, which will make it hard to change the teeth's position.

Hope the above information helps you.

Best Regards.
