Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Can osteomyelitis infection be cured completely? I met with an accident nine months ago, in which my right leg got fractured. I had surgery and had a rod put inside my leg. After three months, I got osteomyelitis. The doctor drained it but recurred again. My doctor removed the rod and put fixeter for three months. But the bone was still not healing. So he removed the fixeter and plastered it for two months. However, the bone alignment is not correct. But there has been no infection for the past five months. My doctor suggested putting the rod again, but another doctor said there is a hundred percent chance of the infection recurring if the rod is put. Please tell me what should be done. Please help.
Thank you.
Hello
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
In any bone infection, first of all, the infected tissue has to be removed completely so that only healthy tissue remains. This requires thorough debridement and if required, an antibiotic spacer to be put inside along with antibiotics to eliminate an infection. Once the infection has been eradicated completely, then definitive fixation can be done with the use of a bone graft if required. If you can send the X-rays and latest blood picture including CBC (complete blood count), ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), and CRP (C-reactive protein) values, I can suggest what needs to be done. Also, send clinical pictures of the involved limb.
I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.
Thank you.
