What are the signs of advanced ovarian cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Why is ovarian cancer called the silent killer? What are some of ovarian cancer's most common symptoms that may mimic other health conditions? Are there any telltale signs of beginning or advanced ovarian cancer? What preventative exams do you suggest for women to detect ovarian cancer (especially if it is non-symptomatic)?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Ovarian cancer is often referred to as the "silent" killer because there are often no symptoms until the disease has advanced to an advanced stage. However, three major symptoms are more common in women with ovarian cancer. They are increased abdominal size, persistent bloating (not intermittent bloating), and persistent pelvic and abdominal pain.

In addition, six major signs have been observed, including a swollen or bloated abdomen, consistent abdominal or pelvic pressure, or pain. Unusual vaginal bleeding, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, a change in bowel habits with new onset of constipation or diarrhea, and urinary issues such as urgency or frequency are also signs. Therefore, after 45, a pelvic ultrasound is to be performed once a year. Any of the above telltale signs should be investigated right away.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
