Are there chances someone could inherit Paget's disease from a close family member?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Is Paget's disease inherited? My Grandmother had it. I am going to do PRP hair treatment. Could this be a trigger for Paget's?

Answered by Dr. Anuj Nigam

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Paget's disease has been associated with both genetic (family) and environmental factors (climate, locality, ethnicity, race, etc.). A parent has a chance of transferring the disease to the child is seven to ten times more. There has not been any evidence of trigger factors as far as I know for disease development. It is an Autosomal Dominant type of inheritance. PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) is a relatively safe procedure for hair treatments because it locally acts on the hair bulbs and hair roots to induce growth and does not usually have a broad Systemic (full body) effect. PRP (Platelet-rich plasma ) is made from your own blood, so no immunosuppression is required. However, as you have a family history of Paget's, it's always better to keep a precaution and get some blood tests before and after the PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) procedure, especially for Routine Blood investigation with Serum calcium, Vitamin D3, Alkaline Phosphatase, that is, deranged in Paget's disease. If at the time found to be different than normal, the treatment for the same can be initiated. It is recommended for all people above 40 years old to take supplements of calcium and Vitamin D3 to prevent Osteoporosis and help maintain bone strength during advancing age. You can go for PRP (Platelet-rich plasma ) treatment under a qualified doctor or PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) specialist without any doubt.

Thank you

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your answer. Is the risk still seven to ten if my grandmother had Pagets? So you do not think PRP will trigger Pagets?

Answered by Dr. Anuj Nigam

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The risk is much lesser if non of your parents developed the disease. As I told you, PRP (Platelet-rich plasma ) does not require any heavy immune suppression or serious immune response, as PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) is made from your own blood the chances are minimum. However, the human body is unpredictable hence there is nothing 100% guaranteed. You can go for the treatment if your doctor performing the procedure is confident and experienced in the therapy and you have faith in him.

Thank you.
