Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 22 years old and will soon get a palate expander and braces as I have a crossbite. I wondered if the palate expander can also affect soft tissues like the lips. My lips look prominent, but my palate is very narrow, so I think my palate cannot be expanded more. Also, if my maxilla gets wider than my mandible, would that mean I need a lower jaw expander for aesthetics? Is it necessary to get a lower jaw expander?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Palatal expansion does not have a lot of effect on your lips, but it definitely improves your smile and esthetics as your teeth will follow your lower lip. There is a crossbite which means that you would only need maxillary expansion and mandibular expansion is not necessary for crossbite situations.

I hope this information will be helpful.
