Can Parkinson's patients recover after a severe UTI?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My dad is 65 years old and suffers from Parkinson's disease. So far, he had been doing quite well until he suffered an extremely severe UTI, which left him confused and weak, unable to even walk properly.

The infection has now been treated, but he still seems to be in much worse condition than before. Can someone who is 65 and has Parkinson's disease recover after a severe UTI episode?

Our concern is that this decline might become permanent as his mobility and memory have not yet reached our expectations.

Please guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is sad to know about your father suffering from this problem. It is something very common for people with Parkinson's disease to suffer from an infection like a urinary tract infection.

Patients at the age of 65 show temporary deterioration in their mobility, cognitive abilities, balance, and functioning skills during and after the infection. After treatment of the infection, it takes weeks or even months to recover from the infection, and not just a few days.

Some patients regain their normal functioning abilities, while some are unable to completely recover even after the infection is gone, depending on the severity of the infection and whether or not it caused delirium, hospitalization, or prolonged inactivity.

If your father is showing signs of confusion, difficulty in remembering things, or difficulty in walking, you should consult his neurologist. There are various options that will help him, such as medication changes, physical therapy, and others.

Although I understand why you may think that the deterioration is permanent, you cannot make a decision at this stage, as there is still hope for better recovery in the future.

I hope this helped you clear your doubts.

Thank you.
