Is a 62-year-old’s hand tremor an early sign of Parkinson's?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 62-year-old man who has noticed that my right hand has started trembling while resting, especially while watching TV (television). My handwriting has become much smaller and messier than it used to be, and my movements are slower overall. My wife says I no longer swing my right arm when I walk, and I have struggled with balance lately.
My grandfather had Parkinson's disease, so I am worried that these symptoms might be the early signs of the same condition.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Your description of a resting tremor in the right hand, smaller handwriting, slowing of movements, reduced arm swing on one side while walking, and some balance difficulty does raise concern for early Parkinson's disease, especially given your family history.
Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in a part of the brain that controls movement. Classic early signs include a resting tremor (present when the limb is relaxed and lessens with movement), bradykinesia (slowness of movement), micrographia (smaller, cramped handwriting), and reduced automatic movements such as arm swings while walking, usually starting on one side of the body. Problems with posture and balance can also develop over time.
While these symptoms strongly suggest Parkinson's, other conditions can mimic it, so a neurological examination is essential to confirm the diagnosis. Sometimes imaging, such as a DaTscan (dopamine transporter scan), supports the diagnosis if the clinical picture is unclear.
The good news is that several effective medications, particularly those that replace or mimic dopamine, can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life, especially when started early.
I recommend scheduling an appointment with a neurologist specializing in movement disorders so you can be evaluated and, if appropriate, begin treatment before the symptoms progress.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
