What could be done to resolve lice in a teenager's head?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister is 16 years old. I found lice in her hair a few days ago. For two nights, she applied butter in her hair while she slept. I then combed through her hair with a flea comb twice a day. She washed everything in vinegar at a high temperature. I have not seen any today on her hair. But, she is still itching much worse than before. How do I know when the lice are gone for sure?

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen your query.

From your description, she seems to have pediculosis, that is head lice infestation. She should maintain a very good hygiene and make sure that no other body parts like axillae (armpits), and groin are involved. The most effective medication in nearly all cases has been 1 % Permethrin which needs to be applied on a weekly basis to the affected area and then left for 12 hours before it is washed off. In addition to this, I recommend the use of anti-allergic medication like Cetirizine and locally applied Crotorax cream (Crotamiton) to relieve itching. These serve as a good measure.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
