I am 23, female. How to improve the skin tone of my face?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a girl, aged 23. My face and neck are about 2 to 2.5 shades darker than my hands, legs, and the rest of my body. I will be staying at home for most days over the next two months. Is there a skincare routine I can follow to help my face and neck match the skin tone of the rest of my body?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I completely understand the concern, especially when it involves the face and neck. There are multiple reasons for this pigmentation. Even when indoors, ultraviolet A (UVA) rays can penetrate through windows and cause photopigmentation over time. This pigmentation usually becomes noticeable only after it has already developed.

The UVA index varies from country to country and even from city to city, and sometimes even minimal exposure can cause significant tanning. There is no need to worry, as this condition can be managed effectively with proper care.

In the morning, start with a gentle, non-foaming cleanser suitable for sensitive skin.

After cleansing, apply Magnesium Ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) 5 % cream evenly over the face and neck. Allow it to absorb completely, then apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 50 or higher, even if staying at home.

In the evening, apply a pea-sized amount of Azelaic acid 20 % cream to the face and neck. Mild tingling during the first few applications is normal. Follow this with a gentle moisturizer. Azelaic acid should be used on alternate nights only.

With regular use, this routine helps reduce pigmentation gradually and improves the overall skin tone of the face and neck.

Follow this regimen consistently for one to two months, and a noticeable improvement in skin tone should be seen.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer.
