Why do I get pimples if I use face creams for a long time?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Any time I use a cream on my face for too long, I get pimples. I have used vitamin C face cream, and when I started using it for two weeks, pimples started coming out on my face. I also used a cream containing Hydroquinone, Tretinoin, and Mometasone, maybe it would stop because I am a fair person. The same thing happened. What face cream can I use?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am really sorry for what you are going through, and I can completely understand your situation. This is a very common problem for many people with sensitive skin.

Based on your history, your skin is acne-prone and sensitive to certain cosmetic creams, especially when they are used continuously. Many brightening or vitamin-based creams (including Vitamin C products or creams containing Hydroquinone, Tretinoin, and Mometasone) can sometimes clog pores, irritate the skin, or trigger acne, particularly if they are heavy or contain comedogenic ingredients. When pores become blocked, small pimples can appear after one to two weeks of regular use, which is what you seem to be experiencing.

A safer approach is to keep your skin care routine simple and non-comedogenic.

  • You can try Azelaic acid cream or serum 10 to 20 percent, which helps with mild acne, reduces pigmentation, and is usually well tolerated by sensitive skin.

  • Apply it every other night (alternate nights) in a thin layer, and use a light, oil-free moisturiser on top if your skin feels dry.

  • During the day, use a gentle cleanser and a non-comedogenic sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent darkening.

  • Avoid using multiple active creams at the same time.

  • Always patch test new products on a small area of skin for a few days before applying them to the whole face.

If possible, please show me a clear picture of your face and tell me what your main concern is: brightening or whitening, or just general skin care?

This will help me guide you better about the skincare products according to your skin type.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
