Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have been taking Topamax for a month now. The neurologist put me on it for post-concussion syndrome for lightheadedness. I had concentration issues, forgetfulness, bad brain fog, sleeping problems, frequent urination, and blurry vision. I could not handle the symptoms, so I tried weaning myself off. The neurologist had me on 25 mg twice a day for a week. I quit for a few days and then went back on 25 mg at night, which was told by the doctor to take for another week or week and a half and then split the 25 mg pill into half. I took that for four days and then stopped. I did restart one half of the 25 mg pill for one day but then started experiencing horrible pins and needles, burning, and itching, so stopped taking it altogether. It has been about four days since my last dose. I have no rash, and Benadryl is not helping. I need to know if this is withdrawal symptoms and will the symptoms go away. I am at my end right now. Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
It is not a withdrawal symptom; it is just a side effect of Topamax (Topiramate). Pins and needle sensations are seen in many cases. Sure it will go since you have stopped the medicine. Make sure this was given for lightheadedness only, not for seizure following a concussion. If there was no seizure in the past, you might stop Topamax; otherwise, you have to replace it with other antiepileptic medicines.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Thank you, doctor, for your reply.
It is given only for lightheadedness. How long does it take for the pins and needles sensation to go away because I have been off for four days?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
It should go away within one week, so probably you should be ok within the next three to four days; if it continues, then you need to consult again with your neurologist.
Thank you.
