What causes hard swelling at the bone graft site?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had an extraction of my lower molar with bone graft yesterday. My tongue naturally goes to the gap. When I sneezed last night, I felt unusual pain and hard swelling in the grafted area. My stitches remain intact. Should I be concerned?

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Do not worry if the stiches are intact. But keep your tongue away from the extracted site. After extraction, there will be an unsual feeling inside the mouth for three days.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

My upper molar hits the lower extracted site and I feel a shift in the membrane and stitches. It is been 24 hours after extraction. Should I be concerned? Please help.

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Attach the pictures of the exposed wound and stitches. It is better to wait and watch. Gargle with warm salt water twice a day to prevent infection and for better healing.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

I have attached the pictures. Will the membranes fall off after sometime?

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

From the image attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), the membrane is adequate and looks fine. Your wound appears to be healing and there is no inflammation and redness. The outer layer will disintegrate and the inner layer will integrate into the soft tissue.
