Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am confused because after my period ended, it started bleeding again after one day. The bleeding is light, but it is not stopping. It has been happening for two days now. Is this normal?
Kindly advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read the query and understand the concern.
The most likely cause is breakthrough bleeding due to Levonorgestrel emergency contraception. Levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pills contain a high dose of hormones, which can temporarily disturb the menstrual cycle. This disturbance may lead to light bleeding or spotting, bleeding that starts again after the period, and irregular bleeding for a few days.
Light bleeding for about two days fits this pattern, and it usually clears up within a few days. Your next period might come a week or two earlier or later than usual.
See a doctor if it becomes heavy enough to soak a pad every hour, or you get severe abdominal pain or dizziness.
Emergency contraceptive pills like Levonorgestrel are intended for occasional use only and not for regular contraception. Overall, the most likely explanation is hormone-related breakthrough bleeding after taking emergency contraception, which is usually temporary and resolves on its own.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
