Is it advisable to take Norlut-N continuously for three months to postpone periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have used the tablet Norlut-N to postpone my periods in the last month for five days. And I want to postpone for this month (for five days). And again, I need to postpone my periods for next month (it is mandatory). Can I use those tablets continuously for three months? Do I get any side effects? Please suggest me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Norlut N (a synthetic form of progestin)is used to delay menses or as a contraceptive. It can cause irregular menstrual bleeding, breast tenderness, puffiness of hands, and face, weight gain, mood changes, facial hair growth, etc.

If you are taking five days every month to extend periods for five days for a total sequentially three months, it is fine. But continuously for more than 30-40 days use is not suggested from my side as it will cause heavy withdrawal bleeding along with clots and can prolong spotting or irregular bleeding and weight gain along with breast tenderness.

As it is a hormone and everyone's body's response to hormones is not identical, it differs from person to person in frequency and severity.

If you want contraceptive measures, discuss them with your detailed history.

Watch for abnormal symptoms.

I hope you find it helpful.

Kind regards.
