Can a faint line on a pregnancy test be considered positive?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My period is due in a week, and I took a pregnancy test today. There was a faint second line that was visible when looked at carefully. I tested again today, and the line is still faint but visible.

Is there a possibility that I am pregnant?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query, and I understand your concern.

Result interpretation (based on what I see): Your pregnancy test shows two lines. Even if the second line is faint, it is still considered a positive result.

Key points:

  1. Two lines: Positive (regardless of how faint the second line is).
  2. A faint line can happen due to: Testing early, before your missed period, or due to low but rising levels of hCG (pregnancy hormone).

What you should do:

  1. You are likely pregnant. Take another test around your expected period date to confirm. The line should become darker.
  2. See an obstetrician as soon as possible.
  3. If available, consider a blood test (beta-human chorionic gonadotropin) for a more accurate and quantitative result.
  4. Do not start or stop any medications without consulting a doctor.

See a gynecologist if you:

  1. Experience cramping or spotting.
  2. Have a history of ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
  3. Are unsure about continuing the pregnancy.

I hope this helps you.

Kind regards.
