Can I use skin whitening tablets while pregnant?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am currently 8 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Four days ago, I took Swisse Bright Skin Booster capsules, which contain the following ingredients:

  1. 5 mg of Vitamin B6.

  2. 200 mg of Vitamin C.

  3. 2 mg of Astaxanthin (from Haematococcus pluvialis).

  4. 240 mg of Cysteine.

  5. 50 mg of Glutathione.

  6. 1000 mcg of Briar Rose.

  7. 2.5 g of cranberry.

  8. 800 mg of pomegranate.

For three consecutive days, I took two capsules each day. On the fourth day, I read the instructions and discovered that it is not recommended for pregnant women. Now, I am worried that taking six capsules may harm my baby.

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Generally, these types of products are not recommended during pregnancy due to limited data on their safety and proven benefits.

There have been very few trials conducted on such compounds, but none have shown teratogenic potential. Additionally, you used a very small quantity, so please try not to worry.

While 100 % satisfaction is not guaranteed, the available data indicate that these products are not teratogenic, meaning they do not cause deformities. It is also important to note that any product will not show effects in just two or three days.

Please wait for your ultrasound for the nuchal translucency (NT), newborn screening (NB), and dual markers, as those results will be helpful. If you experience any bleeding or pain, please consult your gynecologist.

Rest assured, try not to panic or stress. The disclaimers regarding the use of these products during pregnancy are often in place because they do not show significant benefits or are not necessary.

I hope this clarifies your doubts. Please take a moment to rate and provide your valuable feedback.

Thank you.
