Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 19-year-old male with premature gray hair. I have gray hair only on the top of my head, not on the sides. About 50 percent of the hair on the top is gray, while the hair on the sides is completely black. I have applied a hair serum to try to reverse it.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you so much for sharing your concern with me.
At 19 years of age, the presence of gray hair is termed premature greying (premature canities). While it can be cosmetically concerning, it is usually not a serious medical condition. When greying occurs predominantly on the top of the scalp while the sides remain black, it is often due to genetic patterning, as different areas of the scalp may grey at different rates. If there is a family history of early greying in parents or close relatives, this is the most likely cause.
Gray hair occurs when melanocytes in the hair follicles reduce or stop producing pigment. Once a hair turns gray, it typically does not revert to black naturally. At your age, it is reasonable to rule out contributing factors such as vitamin B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, significant stress, or nutritional imbalance.
You may consider getting basic blood tests done, including a CBC (complete blood count), serum ferritin, vitamin B12 levels, and a thyroid profile. If any deficiency or disorder is detected, appropriate correction may help slow further greying, although it may not reverse existing gray hair.
Hair serums marketed for reversing gray hair are generally not effective in restoring natural pigment. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in protein, ensuring adequate vitamin intake (especially vitamin B12 if you are a vegetarian), managing stress, and avoiding harsh chemical treatments are advisable.
If investigations are normal and there is a family history of early greying, the condition is most likely genetic, and cosmetic coloring remains the only reliable option for managing its appearance.
I hope this helps with your query. Please feel free to share your valuable feedback to help improve patient care.
Thank you.
