Are tiredness and fever early signs of HIV infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My cousin is worried about having a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). What are the first signs to look for? He has been feeling tired all the time, losing weight fast, and has fever on and off for the last month. He also said he is having night sweats and feels sore in his throat sometimes. Could these be related to HIV or are they just common issues? He is very stressed about it but is not sure if he should get tested right now. Do we need to wait for more symptoms to show up or is it better to test right away? Please guide us, as we are really confused about what to do.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry. I am here to take care of you.

Regarding your cousin's symptoms, some of the symptoms are HIV-related, and the other parts are related to tuberculosis. Any cough stained with sputum? Also, remember that HIV causes opportunistic infections like tuberculosis to invade the body.

I suggest you to do the following tests:

  1. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

  2. Tuberculin test to rule out tuberculosis.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
